Festive Snowman Oreo Balls are impressive, adorable and so much fun to make! With just minutes of prep time and a few simple ingredients, these fudgy no-bake truffles are ready to serve in no time. They’re the perfect addition to any holiday dessert table!
The fact that they’re a no-bake treat that uses just a handful of ingredients makes them the perfect quick and easy holiday dessert, no matter the occasion!
These adorable snowman Oreo balls are joining the ranks of my family’s favorite desserts! They’re chewy and fudgy on the inside with a slightly nutty flavor, thanks to the Nutella, then coated in hardened white chocolate.
Once they’re set, we decorate them using black gel, orange sprinkles, and a Reese’s cup top hat…and then try and resist eating all of them at once.
They couldn’t be any cuter or easier to make!
If you’re making a few different types of truffles for your dessert table, snowman Oreo balls are just the beginning. Peanut butter buckeye balls are another great addition to give everyone a chance to sample a variety.
Make more than you need though, if your kids are anything like mine they’ll be right there in the kitchen sampling the goods ahead of time!
Why you’ll love making Snowman Oreo Balls
Easy to make – The steps are easy, but so are the ingredients. There’s nothing complicated about this recipe, no tempering chocolate and no baking. The ingredients are readily available in your grocery store, and flexible if need be.
Fun and festive – I mean, who doesn’t love an adorable decorated dessert?! Pop one or two in your mouth with a cup of hot cocoa for the kids or spiked punch for the adults, and it’s officially a holiday party!
Freezer-friendly – Great for making ahead of time and freezing for later for the holiday season! If you’re giving them as gifts for friends and family, they’ll stay fresh for a while.
Equipment you’ll need
- Food processor – A cost effective and convenient way to chop ingredients.
- Mixing bowls – Make sure they’re microwave safe for melting the candy melts.
- Cookie Scoop – I like to use a cookie scoop to portion out the mixture.
- Baking sheet – I recommend a lipped baking sheet so your balls don’t hit the floor. Speaking from experience.
Below is a list of the ingredients you’ll need to gather to make this recipe. Scroll all the way down for the full recipe card.
- Oreo Cookies – You’ll need about 36 cookies for this recipe. Do not separate them, you’re using the cream too! It’s what will help bind the snowman balls together. For a flavor twist, use a different kind of Oreo in your next batch. Mint chocolate Oreos are always a good idea.
- Hazelnut Spread – Most likely you’ll find Nutella to be the most popular. It’s a sweet, chocolatey spread made with hazelnuts, cocoa, and sugar (for the most part) and is easily spreadable. If you have a homemade version or a different kind you like to use, go for it.
- Cream Cheese – I recommend using cream cheese from a block, rather than from the spreadable container. It’ll contain less water and hold its structure better. Be sure to bring it to room temperature ahead of time, at least 30 minutes, that way it creams nicely.
- White Candy Melts – I prefer Ghirardelli vanilla candy melts over almond bark or candy coating, but either will work. These come in little white disks that easily melt in the microwave. You can use a double boiler if you’d like, however, if you’re looking for a shortcut, the microwave is it! You can also use white chocolate chips if you prefer.
- Mini Peanut Butter Cups – Used for the top hat. They’re usually in the baking aisle or you can order them, but you could use mini Oreo cookies, mini Hershey’s kisses, or even brown M&Ms instead. Get creative!
- Orange Sprinkles – Used for the snowman’s carrot nose. If you prefer to use orange gel instead, you can.
- Black Decorating Gel – The gel is used for the eyes and mouth. If you’d rather use sprinkles or balls for the eyes, that would work. You could also use melted chocolate chips for this step – melt them, add them to a sandwich bag, and then snip the tip to pipe them on.
How to make Snowman Oreo Balls
- STEP ONE: First, pulse the Oreos in a food processor until fine crumbs have formed. If you don’t have one, place them in a zip-top bag and crush them using a rolling pin.
- STEP TWO: Then, add the Nutella and cream cheese to the food processor and combine with the cookie crumbs until a dough is formed. If you’re not using a food processor, mix cream cheese and Nutella in a bowl with a hand mixer, then stir in the oreo crumbs.
- STEP THREE: Next, Use a small cookie scoop or tablespoon to portion out the amount needed for each ball. Don’t be afraid to get your hands dirty! Roll them up and place each one on a wax paper or parchment-lined baking sheet. Place them in the freezer for at least 10 minutes. They’re easier to work with when cold.
- STEP FOUR: While the balls are chilling, in a microwave-safe bowl, melt the chocolate coating in 30-second intervals, stirring between each one, until smooth.
- STEP FIVE: Then, dip balls into the bowl of melted chocolate to coat them completely. Use a fork to roll it around and then lift to let the excess chocolate drip off. Place back onto the prepared baking sheet. Add a mini peanut butter cup on top and an orange sprinkle where the nose should be.
- STEP SIX: Finally, transfer the sheet of assembled truffles to the fridge to harden and set for 10 minutes. Then, finish the snowman face with black gel for the mouth and eyes.
Tips & Suggestions
- Work quickly, so the melted chocolate doesn’t solidify before you finish coating them all.
- If the chocolate does start to harden, pop it back in the microwave for another 10-15 seconds.
- Use a toothpick to dip if you’re fumbling with the fork. Stick it in before dipping, and once you’ve placed it on the parchment paper, remove the stick and gently cover the hole with the melted chocolate.
- Have fun decorating! Get your kids involved and see what kinds of funny faces they make. As I mentioned above, you can use all kinds of different decorations. Use only sprinkles or gel or both. The same goes for the top hat. Lots of options!
- Keep in mind, if you’ve decided to use only gel to decorate your snowman’s head, wait until the chocolate has hardened or it will slide off. Sprinkles need to be placed while the chocolate is still tacky!
How to store leftovers
Keep any uneaten snowman Oreo balls in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 1 week.
Can I freeze them?
You can! If you can help it, I suggest freezing them before decorating, but either way works. Once they have completely set, flash and freeze them on a baking sheet for 30 minutes until solid. Transfer them to a freezer-friendly container or zip-top bag and keep them frozen for up to 2 months.
How to thaw them
Leave them at room temperature on the counter until warmed up. You can even thaw them in the fridge overnight and bring them out to room temperature just before serving, though I must say, they’re very good cold.
How many does it make?
You should get approximately 30 Oreo balls out of this batch, depending on how large you make them.
Can I use white chocolate chips instead?
You can! You’ll just need to follow the melting instructions on the package.
Are double stuffed Oreos OK to use?
As yummy as the thought is, I would stick to regular for this recipe. Overdoing it on the cream can alter the consistency of the dough (and make it too sweet) which might affect how it sets. If you do try, let me know what you think.
Do I need to chill the balls before dipping in chocolate?
It will make your life a lot easier, but chilling the truffles before dipping isn’t totally necessary. They’re much easier to work with when chilled but if you’re in a rush, you can skip the first chill.
If you’re making a lot, you can keep a batch in the fridge while you work with the others. Then switch. This is optional!
Snowman Oreo Balls
- 36 Oreos
- 1 cup Hazelnut spread such as Nutella
- 4 ounces Cream Cheese softened to room tempurature
- 15 ounces white candy melts
- 30 mini Peanut Butter Cups
- 2 teaspoons orange sprinkles
- Black gel writer
- Line baking sheet with parchment or waxed paper. Set aside.
- Place Oreos in bowl of food processor. Process and pulse until crumbs have formed.
- Add Nutella and cream cheese to the food processor. Mix until ingredients are well combined and consistency is like dough.
- Portion out tablespoon amount, roll into balls, and place onto baking sheet.
- Place in the freezer for at least 10 minutes. They're easier to dip when chilled.
- In microwave safe bowl, melt candy melts in 30 second intervals, stirring between each interval, until smooth.
- Coat truffles in melted chocolate. Remove with fork and allow excess to drip off. Place on baking sheet and top with peanut butter cup. Place sprinkle for nose. Continue this process with remaining truffles.
- Refrigerate 10 minutes or until candy has hardened.
- Remove from refrigerator. Make eyes and mouth using black gel.
